WordPress Plugins are similar to your FaceBook and iPhone apps. Plugins are additions to a program that allows greater functionality, or rather, a wider range of capabilities.
How does this apply to WordPress?
The most fantastic part about WordPress is that it is an Open-Source platform. What that means is that it is free. It is free to download, free to use, and free to edit. The “Out-of-the-box” version of WordPress has a fantastic range of functionalities that can be used to create wonderful, dynamic websites. But some people/organizations want more options, more features, just more! That’s where the Webmasters come in. The WordPress platform is malleable enough that a webmaster can create a bit of code to manipulate WordPress into nearly anything (within reason, no AI or Terminator style intelligence – yet).
To use examples you might be familiar with, look at your FaceBook account. Have you ever been asked to join in “Mafia Wars,” “Living Social,” or “MindJolt Games?” Those are FaceBook Plugins. Or if you have an iPhone, look at your iPhone. I’m sure you’ve filled your screens with apps that range from a shortcut to FaceBook, a Starbucks Store locator, or a GPS Navigator. Those are iPhone Plugins.
What kind of Plugins can I find for WordPress?
