What better way to celebrate WordPress’ 20-year anniversary than by contributing to the platform via Five for the Future (5FTF)? That’s what WebDevStudios is doing tomorrow, May 26th. We are dedicating the entire workday to giving back to WordPress.
Why Five for the Future
We know WordPress wouldn’t have achieved what it has achieved in the past 20 years if it wasn’t for the contributions of the members of the WordPress community. We can’t help but be grateful because we’re also celebrating a milestone. It’s the 15-year anniversary of WebDevStudios (WDS).
WDS is excited to celebrate both events by hosting 5FTF tomorrow. Our team enjoys taking a break from client work to contribute to the WordPress core, plugin development, and WordCamps. That’s why we do it every last Friday of the month.

For today’s #5FTF, I’m doing an introductory look at the extremely powerful Block Transform API in WordPress.
As plugin developers, making our blocks transformable is essential to keeping WordPress as open and hassle-free as we can.https://t.co/I3YYHZDrPA pic.twitter.com/Mq3578FTpH

Today I will be updating old community plugins so they can me used with WordPress latest version and FSE Theme training!— Nick (@NicolasGuzCa) April 28, 2023
Just submitted my Copyright Footer Block for #WordPress FSE sites to the plugin repo. Now I wait for approval.
Pretty stoked that @webdevstudios lets us devote a whole day once a month to work on things that benefit the WP community. #5ftF

Sometimes a team member has to delay their 5FTF day due to client work. That happened to Lead Engineer David Walz. He just took his 5FTF day on May 5th.
I’m celebrating Friday with some #5FTF 😎 I finished a new article post and am starting a new theme using the wd_s starter theme https://t.co/u3bHiutXW9

5FTF Slack Channel
We keep an active 5FTF Slack channel where we report our plans for the day. This serves well for WDS teammates who aren’t on Twitter but also allows for calls for collaboration. Some 5FTF projects require a second pair of eyes, feedback, or a development partner. Here is a sample of some of the activities that took place on that channel last month.
- Principal Engineer Joel Schlotterer put a call out for other engineers who are experienced working with FSE because he was interested in creating something that could be configured for a small brochure site in two days.
- Senior Backend Engineer Mauricio Andrade announced that he would work on the updates for our open-source theme wd_s. Lead Engineer Amor Kumar joined Mauricio in his efforts. (The newest version of wd_s was released a few days ago.)
- Senior Frontend Engineer Marty O’Conner shared that his plans were to continue to work on his Hero block, which he built with Gutenberg. Backend Engineer William Bay collaborated with him.
- Principal Engineer Sal Ferrarello announced an interesting 5FTF project, saying, “I’m working on fetching weather data, displaying it through the REST API, and writing a separate React app to display it.”
