As a WordPress Support Technician for WebDevStudios, I am no stranger when it comes to speaking about WordPress in front of an audience, but speaking to a classroom of kids is a different story. On April 5th, I participated in Career Day at Marshall C. Darnell Elementary School in Las Vegas, Nevada. I’ve always wanted to do something like this – inform children of the endless possibilities of a career in web design and development. So when the opportunity came up, I was happy to commit. The way I see it, donating my time to Career Day is just another way that WDS gives back.
It turns out, kids like to ask questions. And I mean, lots of questions. This is especially true when you mention that your career involves building applications. Before I could show examples of the sites and apps we’ve built, the kids raised their hands to ask questions.
“Did you build Minecraft?”
“Did you build Angry Birds?”
“Did you build Super Mario?”
Unfortunately, my answer to those questions is no. But, after showing examples of the websites and apps I have been able to work on, the kids actually were impressed. They began to ask questions about Campbell’s Soup and Microsoft. Many had questions about the ingredients of their favorite soup. Luckily, all of the nutrition details are listed on the website. I was not expecting questions about soup ingredients.
In the end, Career Day at Marshall C. Darnell Elementary School was a huge success. I can’t wait to go back next year.
