WordPress 6.9 Debuts New Blocks

New blocks include the Math Block for formulas and equations, the Accordion Block for displaying expanded and collapsing content, and the Time-to-Read Block, which estimates content length. Besides offering up additional blocks, the Site Editor in WordPress 6.9 now allows blocks to be hidden and notes to be added to blocks. Additionally, users can now access the command palette throughout WordPress websites, making most actions possible with a couple of keystrokes (command or control + K), which potentially streamlines workflows considerably.

Improve Connectivity with WordPress 6.9

With these advances come updates to dataviews and dataforms components and several APIs. The new Abilities API tightens up security protocols and improves the ability for WordPress to connect to outside systems, paving the way for more AI integration and cleaner development workflows. Additionally, the interactivity and block binding APIs have been updated, elevating their capabilities.

Watch for Performance Gains

Plus, there are advances in performance, as well! Script and style handling have been refined, along with queries and caching. Output buffering was standardized, too, leading to more consistency in filtering and caching, and fewer overall conflicts. Another addition that benefits website visibility is that ES Modules and Import Maps can utilize the “fetchpriority” attribute to guide search engines to key content and elements.
