How to Connect Claude AI Using WordPress AI Integration

What if you could chat directly with your live WordPress database from inside your favorite AI client? As the demand for seamless WordPress AI integration grows, exporting CSVs, manual copy-pasting, and outdated information are no longer acceptable. You just need real-time access to your content, your data, and your entire WordPress ecosystem.

With the recent release of WordPress 6.9 and the introduction of the Model Context Protocol (MCP), true WordPress AI integration isn’t just a futuristic concept; it’s a reality you can set up today.

In this guide, we are going to walk through exactly how to connect Claude AI directly to a live WordPress website using the new WordPress MCP Adapter plugin. It is an absolute game-changer for content, SEO, and enterprise marketing teams.

Let’s dive into how it works and how you can set it up.

What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)?

Before we get to the WordPress side of things, it helps to understand how modern AI agents connect to external tools.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open-source standard designed to connect AI applications (like Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini) to other data systems. Simply put, it gives AI systems a standardized way to read and interact with external data sources. In our case, that data source is your live WordPress website.

The WordPress 6.9 Abilities API & MCP Adapter Plugin

WordPress open-source is always at the forefront of technology. To bridge the gap between AI clients and your CMS, the WordPress core AI team helped build the WordPress MCP Adapter plugin (available on GitHub).

This plugin connects your site’s data to the MCP standard, but it relies on a massive new feature introduced in WordPress 6.9: The Abilities API.

The Abilities API allows developers to register specific data points and feed them directly into an AI tool. You can give the AI access to:

  • All your published posts and pages.
  • Your user database.
  • E-commerce product data and inventory.
  • Customized data from a unique intranet or enterprise application.

You only expose the data you want the AI to see, allowing for highly secure, real-time conversations about your live website.

Step-by-Step: Configuring Claude to Connect to WordPress

Setting this up requires a bit of configuration on both your WordPress site and your Claude desktop application. Here is exactly how to do it.

Step 1: Install the MCP Adapter Plugin

First, download and install the WordPress MCP Adapter plugin on the live website you want to connect to your AI client. This is the foundation that allows your site to communicate via the protocol.

Step 2: Create a Custom Plugin to Register Abilities

When Claude connects to your site, it won’t inherently know what it is allowed to look at. You need to register an “ability” so the AI knows what data it can pull.

To do this, you create a very simple custom plugin. For example, you can register a new ability called wds/getposts. In the callback function for this ability, you simply write a standard WP_Query that pulls back the top 50 posts and returns them. Now, anytime Claude triggers this ability, it fetches the absolute latest content directly from your database.

Step 3: Set Up a Secure User Role & Application Password

When MCP connects, it needs to authenticate as a user on your WordPress site. Security is paramount here.

  1. Create a Limited User: Set up a dedicated “MCP User” account. We highly recommend setting this user’s role to Contributor (or a custom read-only role). You do not want this account to have publishing or administrative capabilities.
  2. Generate an Application Password: The Claude MCP connection does not use your standard WordPress password. You need to generate an Application Password specifically for this connection. Go to the user profile, create a new application password (e.g., “Claude MCP”), and copy it immediately. (Note: You will only see this password once!)

Step 4: Add the Connection to Claude’s JSON Config

Finally, you need to tell Claude where to look. Open your Claude desktop app, navigate to Settings > Developer, and edit your MCP config file.

You will add a simple JSON snippet that includes:

  • Name: Your website name (e.g., WebDevStudios)
  • URL: Your live website URL
  • Username: The limited MCP user you created
  • Password: The Application Password you just generated

Save the file, restart Claude, and start a brand new chat. You should now see your WordPress connection active under the Connectors menu!

Live Demo: What Can You Actually Do With a WordPress AI integration?

Now that we are connected to a live WebDevStudios website, the possibilities are mind-blowing. Here are just a few ways you can use this real-time connection:

1. Instant Content Gap Analysis

You can prompt Claude: “Pull my recent posts. Tell me which topics I’m covering, what gets the most detailed coverage, and identify any potential gaps.” Claude will instantly execute the wds/getposts ability, read your live content, and provide a strategic breakdown of what your marketing team should write next.

2. Automated Newsletter Generation

Want to send out a monthly digest? Prompt Claude: “Read my latest blog posts and generate a monthly newsletter digest.” Claude will pull the exact text from your live site and format it perfectly for your email marketing tool.

3. Real-Time SEO Optimization & A/B Testing

Prompt Claude: “Take my top five blog posts and give me some A/B test variations on the titles that will rank well in search engines.” Because you can pass metadata (like SEO titles and descriptions) through the Abilities API, Claude can analyze your live SEO strategy and offer instant optimizations.

The Future of Enterprise WordPress AI

These integrations are barely scratching the surface of what is possible. Imagine taking this a step further by pulling in your Google Analytics or HubSpot data alongside your WordPress content. A flawless WordPress AI integration means you could ask Claude exactly which blog posts have the highest bounce rates and have it rewrite the introductions in real-time.

At WebDevStudios, we are already sitting down with our enterprise clients to implement this exact WordPress AI integration for their marketing teams. The WordPress 6.9 Abilities API and the MCP Adapter are production-ready today and fundamentally change how we interact with content at scale. If your organization is ready to build a smarter, AI-integrated digital ecosystem, contact the team at WebDevStudios today to set up a call with your content team and explore your options.
